District Health Information System (DHIS)

DHIS 2 is the leading web-base, fee ad open source information management platform running in more than 50 countries globally. DHIS 2 provides a wide range of possibilities for building integrated yet customised information systems for all sectors.

We offer an accelerated course in DHIS 2 data analytics, data capture and system configuration. Lessons are presented through brief lectures, worked examples, practice exercises and class discussions.

Module 1: Data Analytics and Dashboards

Statement of Purpose

Data has to tell a story, and the visualization techniques employed will dictate the quality of the narrative. In
information management systems data is consumed for decision making through clear and concise dashboards (collections of different data visualizations, charts, maps, and pivot tables). Choosing the most appropriate visualization technique or dashboard to convey a certain message or target a specific audience is key for program success.

Objectives

Through presentations, examples, and exercises with real data, this course will equip participants with an understanding of the various data visualization techniques, analysis concepts, and dashboard creation in DHIS2.

Module 2 – Fundamentals of DHIS2 System Architecture and System Configuration

Statement of Purpose

DHIS2 gives users the ability to perform all system configuration for Data Capture through the user interface. This course will teach participants to use DHIS2 structural foundations, system architecture, data elements, and organizational unit hierarchies, to build live, robust data capture systems. This course will also place a significant emphasis on system architecture, configuration best practices and lessons learned from dozens of countries and DHI2 implementations.

Objectives

The objectives are to have participants understand system configuration processes and build simple aggregate data capture and patient tracking programs.

Module 3 – DHIS2 Data Quality and Feedback Mechanisms

Statement of Purpose

High data usage requires good data quality. This course will teach participants how to fully utilize the DHIS 2 downstream data analysis tools and key methods for data quality analysis. Furthermore, this course will also introduce data feedback mechanisms to guide resource allocation and to promote program ownership at the grassroots level.

Objectives

This course will teach participants techniques for optimizing data quality, data auditing, data validation, and tracking data entry errors in DHIS2.

As the global community refocuses its efforts toward Education 2030, the importance of quality education is more apparent than ever. Research clearly indicates that quality education draws learners to schools and helps keep them there. By definition, quality education is a relevant education, which means learners will be better positioned to leave schools ready to make contributions to the world around them.

Underlying quality education is quality data, defined by its relevance, timeliness and coverage. Quality data offers education planners the evidence needed for sound decision-making in education policy development, teacher deployment and resource allocation. Quality data is essential in ensuring a human rights-based approach to education, providing rights holders with transparency and duty bearers with accountability within the education system.

The OpenEMIS Initiative responds to this growing demand for quality data towards quality education. OpenEMIS is part of UNESCO’s response to increasing demand for support in the area of education system planning and management. It supports the building of a robust and reliable Education Management Information System (EMIS) and the strengthening of national capacities in the provision of reliable information for the planning, monitoring and evaluation of education systems.

OpenEMIS is a suite of interrelated software solutions that collects and manages data into a data warehouse, and disseminates this data via visualizations, dashboards, and monitoring tools.

OpenEMIS Features

OpenEMIS has a number of independent and interconnected solutions to:
(a) Data capture on institutions, students, staff;
(b) Computation of standards-based education indicators in compliance with internationally recommended methodology;
(c) Consolidated data warehouse of all education data in the region;
(d) Advanced methods for data reporting, data visualization, and dissemination to all stakeholders, including ministry planners, principals, teachers, parents, students.

OpenEMIS offers several products and services, including OpenEMIS Core that enables administrators to manage students across multiple schools, and OpenEMIS Dashboard that enables administrators to build custom dashboards to monitor indicators.

We provide capacity building through professional training and on-site technical missions to key stakeholders in the operation and administration of OpenEMIS.

Geographic Information System (GIS)

This Programme is intended to serve:
  • Recent graduates who wish to acquire technical expertise to support the topical knowledge gained in their undergraduate major.
  • Returning students who wish to acquire specialized training to meet current (or future) job requirements calling for GIS knowledge.
  • Professionals in industry, defence and intelligence, government, healthcare, mapping and charting, natural resources, public safety, transportation and utilities and communications.

What is GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a discipline devoted to the acquisition, storage, management, analysis and visualization of spatial data. GIS gives you the ability to integrate and analyze spatial and non-spatial information for mapping, planning and decision making.

About the Programme

The primary goal of the Programme is to ensure that participants become sufficiently grounded in theoretical underpinnings of GIS applications and gain skills needed to construct new applications in the physical and social realms. The full range of GIS capabilities is covered, including data capture, analysis, modeling and cartographic representation.

The Programme covers the foundations of GIS and spatial analysis, including cartography and statistical methods. Through hands-on exposure in the form of lab exercises and course projects, experience will be acquired with major GIS software packages including ArcGIS.
